An evidence-based horse deworming schedule using fecal egg counts: when to test, which wormers to use, seasonal timing, and how to avoid resistance.

For decades the standard advice was simple: worm every horse, every eight weeks, rotating between drug classes. That approach is now considered outdated by most veterinary parasitologists — it drives resistance, costs money, and treats horses that don't need treating. Modern programs are built around fecal egg counts (FEC) and target the individual horse instead of the whole yard.

Why rotational deworming stopped working

Only three drug classes are available for horses: benzimidazoles (fenbendazole, oxibendazole), tetrahydropyrimidines (pyrantel) and macrocyclic lactones (ivermectin, moxidectin). No new class has reached the market in decades. Blanket dosing every horse repeatedly selects for resistant worm populations, and resistance to benzimidazoles and pyrantel is now widespread in small redworm (cyathostomins) across Europe and North America.

The other insight that changed practice: parasite burden is not evenly distributed. In a typical yard, roughly 20% of horses shed around 80% of the eggs. Treating the other 80% on a fixed calendar achieves very little except accelerating resistance.

What a fecal egg count actually tells you

An FEC counts strongyle (and often ascarid) eggs per gram of manure. It identifies which horses are high shedders and, when repeated after treatment, whether the wormer you used actually worked.

  • Low shedder: under ~200 eggs per gram (EPG) — usually no treatment needed
  • Moderate shedder: ~200–500 EPG — treat based on vet advice and yard pressure
  • High shedder: over ~500 EPG — treat, and re-test to confirm efficacy

FEC does not detect tapeworm reliably, does not detect encysted small redworm larvae, and does not detect bots. Those gaps are why a purely test-driven program still includes a small number of fixed treatments.

This is a common structure for adult horses (over 4 years) in a temperate climate with year-round turnout. Adjust with your vet for your region and grazing management.

Foals, youngstock and new arrivals

Foals and horses under about three years are a genuine exception — their immunity is immature and ascarids (roundworm) can cause impaction colic. They need a structured programme from a few months of age rather than a purely test-led one, designed with your vet.

Pasture management does more than any wormer

  • Poo-pick paddocks at least twice weekly — this is the single highest-impact action
  • Avoid overstocking; more horses per hectare means more larval intake
  • Rest and rotate paddocks where possible, or cross-graze with sheep or cattle
  • Never spread fresh horse manure back onto grazing land
  • Feed forage from racks or clean surfaces rather than off contaminated ground

Dose by weight, not by eye

Keep the records — they're the whole point

A targeted program only works if you can see each horse's history: FEC dates and results, which product was used, at what dose, and what the follow-up count showed.
